Significance of International Women’s Day
International women’s day is observed on March 8 every year to honour and appreciate all the important contributions of female leaders to the society, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Since 1978, it has been observed annually in different parts of the world. In honor of this year’s celebration, UNESCO took the lead in organising this historic commemoration.
The official website of UNESCO declared that the day ‘celebrates the great contribution of women to the advancement of humankind’ and calls upon men and women of all nations around the world to show their appreciation for female leaders. World Educators’ Day focuses on the promotion of quality learning for learners, especially girls. This special day gives girls more opportunities not only in formal learning, but also for personal development. It encourages everyone to have self-confidence, self-esteem, self-respect, self-worth and empowerment. Further, I believe that girls should be given equal opportunity, especially opportunities in terms of access to educational and vocational training in line with Sustainable Development Goals 2 and 3 which includes gender equality.

World Affairs Organisation (WAO), holds an annual event called Special Session held on January 27 to discuss and deliberate on several pressing topics with participants around the world. One such high profile event held this year was the 37th session of the General Assembly of the United Nation. On December 2nd, UN’s Secretary-General expressed her hope that attendees can join hands in advancing women’s rights worldwide and raise awareness of women in diverse sectors.
